Callie and her boyfriend, Jeremy, scheduled an appointment at Morning Star to confirm her pregnancy and talk about options. She met with the counselor alone at first to talk about her situation. Callie quickly opened up and said, “I have heard that you are a Christian organization, but I wanted to make sure this is a no judgement place”. The counselor assured her that we don’t judge anyone but we share information so that she would be able to make an informed decision.
Callie appeared to appreciate that response. She proceeded to share that she had a young daughter and had previous miscarriages which were emotionally difficult for her. She and Jeremy had been best friends for many years. They had begun dating in the past year. They were not planning on having a baby at this time. She explained that Jeremy works long hours on his job and Callie was concerned about him being “there” for her, as she knows how challenging it is to be a single mom. In addition, finances are tight and they hoped to “get themselves together” before considering marriage and a family. Due to their circumstances and in large part to finances, they were considering an abortion. Callie said that Jeremy has “flip-flopped” between parenting and abortion. She wanted to consider his feelings but wanted him to make his mind up. After going over the abortion procedures, talking about adoption as a gift to parents who could not have children of their own and also, discussing parenting, we asked Jeremy to join us for the pregnancy test.
When the test showed a positive result, they gathered back in the counseling room. Jeremy was teary eyed and his hands were shaking as the advocate reviewed their choices and shared fetal development information. They agreed to have an ultrasound.
During the ultrasound, Jeremy appeared to be in a much better state of mind. They were looking forward to seeing the baby. Even though Callie had already shared with family and her young daughter that she was pregnant, she still hadn’t made up her mind completely. However, after watching their energetic baby on the ultrasound monitor, both were in tears as they accepted photos to share with family.
The following day, Callie and Jeremy called to thank the counselor and nurse sonographer for all they did to help them. They appreciated the compassionate care that was given, without judgement. During a follow-up call with the nurse sonographer, Callie and Jeremy shared that they can’t believe they had ever considered having an abortion and they are firm in their decision to now parent. They promise to call if they need anything and will bring the baby in after he or she is born.
