Medical abortions (the abortion pill) accounted for 16,349 abortions—over 50%—in Pennsylvania in 2020. *
Women desperate to find a solution to an unplanned pregnancy are in danger. “Melissa” is just one example. She experienced a traumatic childhood and, after being shuffled from home to home, found herself forced to live out of a car with her drug-addicted boyfriend.
During the pandemic, Melissa became pregnant, and her boyfriend was pressing her to have an abortion. Melissa went to an abortion clinic and was given the abortion pill, RU-486. Two days after the abortion she rushed to the emergency room due to prolonged, serious pain and bleeding. Melissa described it as “the most horrible experience of my life.” After the abortion trauma, Melissa refused to speak to her boyfriend and began to abuse drugs and alcohol.
A year later, broken-hearted, Melissa became pregnant again. This time she was determined to continue her pregnancy. Shortly after finding out she was having twins, Melissa experienced a miscarriage.
Devastated by the abortion and now the loss of these children, Melissa became hyper-focused on becoming pregnant. Melissa came to Morning Star for a medical pregnancy services appointment because she thought she was pregnant for a third time. After sitting with a counselor to discuss her situation, needs and concerns, our counselor gave Melissa a pregnancy test. Melissa was not pregnant.
Just a few months later Melissa came back to Morning Star for another pregnancy test. For a second time, our counselor confirmed that she was not pregnant. Melissa, full of anguish and fear, expressed she was terrified that she will never be able to conceive or carry a baby after taking RU-486.
It’s too soon to know whether Melissa will be among the many women who are unable to have children as the result of an abortion. What we do know is that women like Melissa have tremendous grief and loss surrounding abortion and miscarriage, and in many cases lasting health ramifications.
Morning Star needs to reach women like Melissa who are actively searching for abortion online. We need to be the first place they turn to for pregnancy and sexual health care.

We may not have the multi-million-dollar funds of big abortion clinics, but we do have each other and the power of God. We must remember that Roe v. Wade ends each time one woman chooses Life.
At Morning Star, Roe v. Wade was overturned 523 times last year. And WE can do it again!
